Round 1 - Halos take 3 of 4 from Royals to advance

GAME 1 - Angel Stadium
Royals 4, Angels 3
Hochevar vs Weaver

Jared Weaver did not have his best day on the hill and the Halo's paid for it.  Of course for most "human" pitchers 4 runs in 7 innings would be an ok outing, but not for Weaver.  KC only had 5 hits on the day, but they sure did make them count.  Melky Cabrera went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's and a homer.  Joakim Soria pitched a perfect 9th to get the save and give the Royals a 1-0 lead in the series.

GAME 2
Angels 8, Roylas 0
Chen vs Haren

Four Angel pitchers combined to scatter 7 hits, fan 10 en route to a group shutout of the Royals.  Vernon Wells, who struggled all year with a batting average in the two-teens, broke out with a 3 for 4 day with 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.  Wells, Aybar, Bourjos and Trumbo all hit homers as the Halos won this one in convincing fashion to even the series at 1 game apiece.

GAME 3 - Kaufman Stadium
Angels 13, Royals 4
Santana vs Francis

The score was tied at 3-3 after 4 innings.  That's when Ervin Santana righted his ship and didn't allow another run.  At that same point Jeff Francis lost his handle on the game and began to melt down.  Anaheim scored 3 in the 4th, 4 in the 5th and 6 in the 7th to blow the game wide open and put the Royals on the brink of elimination.  Angel 1st baseman Mark Trumbo had a breakout day offensively going 3 for 5 with 5 RBI's and 3 runs scored.  Trumbo also hit his 2nd homer of the series.  Tori Hunter's 3 for 5 day was nothing to sneeze at either.

GAME 4
Angels 4, Royals 3 (15 inn)
Williams vs Paulino

Today's storyline should have focused on Felipe Paulino's virtuoso performance.  For 8 innings Paulino was masterful.  He fanned 8 Angels, while walking only 1 and allowing just 2 hits.  His only vice, not being able to close the door and finish his work.  After throwing 124 pitches over those 8 innings Paulino was flat out spent.  Lefty Tim Collins started the inning and gave up a bunt single to Aybar.  He struck out Bobby Abreu then gave way to closer Joakim Soria, who immediately got Howie Kendrick down 0-2 in the count.  Soria tried to go right after Kendrick and made the fatal mistake of putting the ball in the hitting zone.  Kendrick turned on it and hit just far enough to tie the game with one swing, which sucked all the air out of Kaufman Stadium.  A death march of 5 scoreless extra innings brought us to the top of the 15th where Blake Wood managed to walk in 2 batters with 2 outs and the bases loaded.  KC scored 1 in the bottom of the 5th inning to tear at the Aorta of manager Zaner, but with his back firmly against the wall closer Jordan Walden was able to get Jeff Francoeur to ground out to short, with runners on the corners, for the final out of the game and the series.  The Angels gained more baserunners via the walk (10) than via the hit (7), which made it almost fitting that the walk was their best offensive tool in the extra frames.

Round 1 - Nats outlast Reds in 5 game classic series

GAME 1 - Nationals Park
Reds 9, Nats 5
Arroyo vs Marquis
Staten Island's own Jason Marquis left the game with a 5-2 lead, but the Nats pen imploded under the pressure of the Reds bats.  Cincy scored 8 runs over the final 3 innings to make this game a laugher.  6 Reds had 2 hits, including pitcher Jeremy Horst.  Catcher Ramon Hernandez had himself a 3 RBI day for the Reds.  Washington's pen wasted a 2 homer performance from centerfielder Rick Ankiel.

GAME 2
Nats 8, Reds 3
Bailey vs Lannan

John Lannan fanned 5 Reds and gave up just 1 run in 7 innings of work.  This time the Nats pen didn't completely self destruct.  Sure Tyler Clippard's 2 runs in 2 innings was not what the doctor ordered, but with a 7 run lead to play with it was good enough.  Rick Ankiel kept up his hot hitting (3 for 5) as the Nats evened up he series a 1 game apiece.  Ramos, Zimmerman and Ankiel combined for 9 (3 each) of Washington's 11 hits.  Jay Bruce hit homers for the Reds in both games.

GAME 3 - Great American Ballpark
Nats 9, Reds 8
Wang vs Volquez
Washington has to consider themselves lucky to have won a game that Chen-Ming Wang started.  The ability to overcome the 6 runs that he gave up in 4 innings talks to how resilient this young team really is.  Down 6-2 the Nats rallied for 5 runs in the top of the 5th.  Ryan Zimmerman's solo blast followed Ankiel's warning track shot.  A bases clearing double by Laynce Nix broke it open.  Nix would go on to hit a 2 run homer in the 7th to cap off a 5 RBI day.  This pen gave up just 2 runs in 5 innings of work with Drew Storen notching the save.

GAME 4
Reds 5, Nats 2
Hernandez vs Cueto

Johnny Cuerto was masterful with 10 k's in 6 2/3 innings of work as the Reds staved off elimination and forced a decisive game 5.  With the score tied at 1-1 the Reds scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th.  Jay Bruce hit 2 more homers to give him 5 in the series and 1 in each game played.  Both teams combined to strike out 23 times.

GAME 5 - Nationals Park
Nats 5, Reds 3
Leake vs Zimmerman
The decisive game 5 was played on a beautiful 66 degree autumn day in our Nation's capital.  Heading into the bottom of the 6th the tension was mounting as the game was knotted up at 2-2, when National's third basemanRyan Zimmerman  hit a solo shot to dead center to make it 3-2.  Could Washington's suspect pen hold off the Reds great offense ?  The answer:  No...and then Yes.  No, because the Reds managed to tie it up in the top of the 8th with back to back doubles from Jay Bruce and Scott Rolen as starter Jordan Zimmerman tired and Tyler Clippard couldn't clean up his mess.  Cincy's Mike Leake was also tiring as he allowed back to back 1 out doubles to Ankiel and Zimmerman to make it 4-3 Washington.  An RBI single by 1st baseman Mike Morse provided just enough insurance for Storen to close out the game and the series.

The Bucs tomahawk the #1 seed Braves in 5

Game 1
Pittsburgh  4
Atlanta      3
MVP Jose Tabata 3 for 4, 2 runs, HR

The Pirates trailed 2-0 in the 6th inning when they rallied for 3 runs off Tim Hudson highlighted by Garret Jones double off the wall to take a 3-2 lead.  Jose Tabata added a solo homerun in the 8th to secure the win as the Bucs held on for a 4-3 victory.  Paul Maholm bested Tim Hudson as he pitched 6 strong innings to get the victory only allowing 2 runs.  Joel Hanrahan pitched the 9th to get the save.  Tim Hudson suffered the loss allowing 4 runs while striking out 7.  Martin Prado went 3 for 3 for the Braves.  The Buccos take a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2
Pittsburgh 3
Atlanta     9
MVP Chipper Jones 2 for 4, 2 runs, 3 rbi, HR

The Braves needed a win to even up the series and they wasted no time scoring 4 runs in the 1st off Jeff Karstens as Chipper Jones hit a 2-run homer being his second in the series.  Karstens would settle down lasting 4 innings allowing 5 runs.  Jair Jurrjens was dominating allowing 2 runs in 6 2/3 to get the victory.  The Braves scored 9 runs on 10 hits to pound the Bucs into submission evening the series at 1-1.

Game 3
Atlanta 6
Pittsburgh 5
MVP Freddie Freeman 1 for 5, 1 run, 3 rbi, HR

The game was scoreless until the 3rd when Chipper Jones lined a single to score the game's first run.  Freddie Freeman followed that with a 3-run homer to give Atlanta an early 4-0 lead.  However, the Buccos would rally in the 6th.  Jaramillo lined a single scoring Ludwick.  Ryan Doumit comes off the bench and hits a 3-run PH HR to tie the game at 4-4.  Each team would score a run in the 7th to keep the game deadlocked.  Jordan Schafer hit an exciting inside the park homerun for the Braves.  The game goes extra innings as Atlanta scores a run in the top of 11th to take the lead 6-5.  Craig Kimbrel gets the save to give the Braves a 2-1 lead in the series.

Game 4
Atlanta 4
Pittsburgh 5
MVP Andrew McCutchen 2 for 5, 1 run, 2 rbi, SB, GWRBI

The Bucs find themselves in a do or die situation as they must win to keep the series going.  They turn to James McDonald facing rookie sensation Brandon Beachy for the Braves.  It doesn't look good for the Bucs as Atlanta scores 3 runs in the 1st as Brian McCann hits a 3-run homerun.  The Pirates rally again in the 2nd with 2 outs.  The bases were loaded as Andrew McCutchen walked to force in a run.  Garrett Jones doubled off the wall scoring 3 more as the Bucs take a 4-3 lead.  The Braves tie the game in the 7th as Alex Gonzalez hits a solo shot.  This game is headed for extra innings again.  Andrew McCutchen lines a single to score Ronny Cedeno to give the Bucs a dramatic walkoff win and even the series at 2-2.

Game 5
Pittsburgh 3
Atlanta 2
MVP Andrew McCutchen
1 for 3, 1 run, 1 rbi

This game featured a rematch of game 1 pitchers.  Paul Maholm vs Tim Hudson.  The winner advances and the loser goes home.  The Bucs score in the 1st as McCutchen doubles to score Neil Walker for a 1-0 lead.  Atlanta ties it in the 3rd on a Dan Uggla solo shot.  The game remained tied until the 6th when the Buccos scored 2 runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Garret Jones and Pedro Alvarez each had run scoring singles.  The Braves get a run back as Jason Heyward drives home a run to score Brian McCann making it 3-2 in favor of the Pirates.  The Bucs bullpen would take over from here not allowing anymore runs as the Pirates shock the number 1 seed in this best of 5 series.  Joel Hanrahan gets his second save of the series and Paul Maholm wins his second game.  --submitted by Frank Aluzzi--

Round 1 - Sahx sweep Twinkies in 3 straight

GAME 1 - Fenway Park
Red Sox 12, Twins 2
Baker vs Jon Lester

Lester went the distance, allowing just 2 runs and fanning 8.  Baker got bombed and never made it out of the 1st inning, recording just 2 outs and giving up 7 huge runs.  J.D. Drew was the only Sox starter without a knock.  Boston banged out 18 hits.  Kevin Youkilis went 3 for 4 with 5 RBI's.  Leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury (3-5) had 3 RBI's himself with 2 long balls.  Boston hit 5 homers in total.  Minnesota got both of their runs via 2 solo shots off of Michael Cuddyer's bat.  The rest of the team managed just 4 hits.

GAME 2
Red Sox 7, Twins 6
Pavano vs Beckett

Josh Beckett was cruising through 6 and handed a 4 run lead over to the Red Sox pen.  Aceves imploded by allowing 4 runs in just under 2 innings of work.  All of those runs came in the top of the 8th.  Jim Thome's 2 run shot got the party started.  Back to back singles by Valencia and Casilla put runners on 2nd.  Aceves bouncing one in the dirt that Saltalamacchia couldn't handle allowed the runners to move up 90 feed.  Dennard Span lined a single to center to score both and tie the game.  Boston, who stumbled down the stretch and blew their chances at the 2011 post season, needed to right the ship and fast.  Since baseball is a game of redemption Jarrod Saltalamacchia got his when he singled home Carl Crawford in the bottom of the 9th with 2 out for a walk off win.  Hang the loss on Perkins and give the win to Bard, who got the final 4 outs in relief of Aceves.

GAME 3 - Target Field
Red Sox 5, Twins 0
Buchholz vs Liriano

The series headed to the Twin Cities, but the Twins' heart never made the trip west.  After coming back from a 4 run deficit in game 2 and losing in walk off fashion, the young Twins had nothing left in the tank.  Clay Buchholz' complete game 5 hitter was the story on the day.  With the Twins down, Buchholz gave them nothing to get up about.  Boston's 4 run outburst in the 3rd was like the final coffin nail in the Twins season, because it all happened with 2 out.  Adrian Gonzalez singled home Saltalamacchia, who previously walked.  Youkilis singled home Pedroia, who was given an intentional pass before Gonzo batted.  Big Papi walked in front of the enigmatic Carl Crawford, who singled home Gonzo and Youk.  The Sahx added a 5th run in the top of the 5th thanks to an error by Casilla at 2nd, but by that point the Twins had their bags packed and the bus loaded.

Round 1 - Chisox outlast Tribe (update by Ron Burnette)

Holiday Festival – Round 1 – Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago White Sox
Game 1
Cleveland 3 – Chicago 1 (Cleveland leads the series 1-0)
Justin Masteron vs. Mark Buehrle
clip_image002The aces of both staffs met up in game 1. Masterson was well, masterful. He scattered 7 hits in 7.1 shutout innings leading the Tribe to victory in game 1. Asdrubal Cabrera added a 2 run homer in the 3rd and Chris Perez rapped things up getting the final two outs. Omar Vizquel, who must be 50 by now, enjoyed a 3-3 night back in front of fans who still truly love the guy. A sign of things to come?
Game 2
Cleveland 3 - Chicago 9 (Series tied at 1)
Fausto Carmona vs. Phillip Humbler
clip_image004This game was close until the 6th inning. The Pale Hose led 4-3 going into the 6th but added runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to pull away. The White Sox were led by Paul Konerko and Alex Rios with 3 RBIs each and solid starting pitching from Humbler who went 7.1 giving up 3 runs. Rios earned MVP honors.
Game 3
Chicago 6 – Cleveland 7 12 Innings (Cleveland leads the series 2-1)
Josh Tomlin vs. Gavin Floyd
clip_image006Always a critical game when a best of 5 series is tied at 1, this game turned into a classic. The Tribe streaked out to early 6-2 lead after 4. Travis Hafner and Asdrubal Cabrera each contributed 2 run singles. Then it was the White Sox turn to score some runs. 1 run in the 5th and 3 in the 6th, all of which scored after 2 were out, left the game tied at 6. Then something strange occurred. The pitchers took over. For the next 5 innings neither team could score. In the top of the 12th Carlos Santana, no not that one, hit a mammoth 355’ leadoff home run to give the Tribe the lead and ultimately the victory. Vinnie Pestano got the last out for the save.
Game 4
Chicago 17 – Cleveland 9 (Series tied at 2)
Edwin Jackson vs. Hector Carrasco
clip_image008Your scribe is still scratching his head over this one.  Cleveland scored 4 in the 1st and 3 more in the 4th to take a 7-0 lead. Carrasco was cruising. He gave up 2 in the bottom half of the 4th but Cleveland added one in the 5th to take an 8-2 lead. Then the wheels fell off. The train was derailed. The deer looked at the lights. Something happened to the Tribe and before they could wake up the White Sox had scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 9-8 lead. 7 men in row reached base. But to Cleveland’s credit they rebounded to tie the game at 9 in the top of the 8th on a Cabrera single and Santana double. Then that same inexplicable phenomena occurred again and before the Tribe could wake up this time the White Sox had scored 8 times in the bottom of the 9th. 10 different White Sox batted in runs. And the old man Vizquel went 4-6 to raise his average to .667.
Game 5
Cleveland 1 - Chicago 5 (White Sox win the series 3-2)
Justin Masteron vs. Mark Buehrle
clip_image010Give Cleveland credit. Behind their ace Masterson, they took a 1-0 lead into the 4th. But on this night Mark Buehrle was just too good. Mark went 7.2 innings giving up only 1 run. The White Sox scored single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings to pull away and then added 2 more in the 8th to clinch it. Buehrle earned game MVP honors, but Omar Vizquel had the game winning RBI and batted a series high .563 to earn, at least in this scribes estimation, series MVP honors.

Round 1 - 'Jays sweep A's in 3 straight

Oakland 0 Toronto 8
Anderson (L) vs Romero(W)
Toronto rocked starter Anderson for 4 runs in the first inning. Rajai Davis was 1st up, walked then stole 2nd and 3rd. Yunel Escobar and Jose Bautista walked. Canadian born Brett Lawrie double in all three. He scored on a Arencibia single. In the 6th Anderson was pulled and Carignan came in and the Blue Jays rocked another 4 runs off him and Breslow before Zeigler came in to end the inning. Game MVP Ricky Romero pitched a strong game going the distance allowing 5 hits and 5 walks.

Oakland 2 Toronto 3
Cahill(L) Morrow(W)
Toronto opened this close game with a run in the 1st. Rajai Davis singled, Adam Lind sacrifice bunted and Jose Bautista singled him home. They added another in the 5th as Davis tripled scoring J.P. Arencibia and 6th. Cahill was removed during the 6th. Oakland made a game of it scoring in the 8th with a Weeks single, he stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Pennington grounded out scoring Weeks. In the 9th Willingham homered and Oakland threatened to tie it up, With none out. Frank Fransisco came in to relieve Game MVP Brandon Morrow and sat down the next 3 batters for the save.

Toronto 9 Oakland 1
Cecil (W) Gonzalez (L)

Rajai Davis started the game off with an in the park home run. The cool thing was when Davis reached 3rd base the base running coach came up and asked if I wanted to send him home. In the 2nd Toronto added another 3 with a leadoff walk to Juan Rivera and Kelly Johnson homered. Brett Lawrie walked was sacrificed to 2nd and David Cooper brought him home. Oakland's pitching settled down until the 8th when Toronto added 1 more and in the 9th they added 4 more. Game MVP Brent Cecil got the 1st out in the ninth but ran into trouble as Oakland started getting guys on base and scored a run. Then Cecil's arm gave out and Octavio Dotel came in to finish the game off.

A special welcome to Chris Hughes who coached Oakland for the series and playing in his first tourney with us.

Round 1 - Jints sweep Rox in 3 straight

Game #1 - 15 Innings
COL 4 13 1
SFG 3 18 0
WP - Mota (1-0)  LP - Street (0-1)

Colorado took a 4-0 lead on a single run in the 4th (Ianetta RBI single) and three in the 5th (Helton RBI double and Gonzalez 2 RBI single).  But the Giants came right back for 3 in the bottom of the 5th on RBI singles by Sanchez, Sandoval and Beltran.  Pat Burrell tied the game 4-4 with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th.  In the bottom of the 15th Aubrey Huff smacked a one out single, went to 2nd on Ross' walk and scored on Orlando Cabrera's single to left for the win.

Game #2
COL 3  6 0
SFG 9 10 0
WP - Sanchez (1-0)  LP - De La Rosa (0-1)

HR:  Giambi (1), Burrell (1), Ross (1), Beltran (1)

A very tight game through 6 and a half innings as broken wide open by the Giants ith 4 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th.  AT&T's reputation is that of a pitcher's park, but don't tell the Giants who connected for 3 HR's.  Cody Ross went 2/4 with a 2B, HR, 3 RBI and 2 Runs for San Fran.  Jonathan Sanchez went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 9.

Game #3
SFG 6 8 1
COL 1 6 2
WP - Cain (1-0)  LP - Millwood (0-1)
HR:  Huff 2 (2)

Matt Cain threw into the 8th before tiring, only giving up one run on 6 hits and 4 walks.  Aubrey Huff accounted for everything that the Giants would need for the sweep by going 2 for 3, with 2 HR's and 5 RBI.  Congrats to the Giants, and their manager John Lowe on their series win.  --submitted by Tom Landers--

Chisox outlast Tribe in 5 to advance to round 2

The pale hose won in 5 after being down 2 games to 1 and losing 8-2 in game 4. Big comeback in game 4 and Indians looked disheartened in game 5.  --Ron Burnette--

The Dick Clark of baseball, Omar Vizquel once again defies logic and avoids "Father Time" by hitting .563 in the series.  Chicago will play the winner of the Twins/Red Sox series.

Stay tuned for Ron's full series wrap up, coming in a day or two.

Round 1 - Mets (6) vs Dodgers (3) - LA wins in 3 straight

Hit .335 in series with 5 RBI
GAME 1 - 10/1/2011 - Dodger Stadium
Dodgers 4, Mets 2
R.A. Dickey vs Clayton Kershaw

LA got a solid performance out of the reigning NL Cy Young award winner, as the Dodgers doubled up the Mets 4-2.  Aaron Miles scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when James Loney grounded into a DP.  The Mets got 2 in the 3rd off of Kershaw when Daniel Murphy lined a single to center to score Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan.  R.A. Dickey's 1 run lead was short lived.  With 2 out and the bases loaded Matt Kemp, who should have been the NL MVP, sliced a ground single through the 3-4 hole two score Gordon and Blake.  Kershaw was masterful in defending his 1 run lead.  LA added an insurance run in the 8th when Kemp led off the inning with a 401 foot blast to left center.  Javy Guerra pitched a scoreless 9th to save the win for Kershaw who went 7 2/3 and gave up just 2, while striking out 7.

GAME 2 - 10/2/2011
Dodgers 7, Mets 6
Chris Young vs Hiroki Kuroda

Both starters held their own with Young leaving after 6 with a 4-2 lead.  LA erupted for 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to make it 6-4.  Pinch hitter Justin Sellers' 3 run shot was a big blast off of disappointing reliever Bobby Parnell.   The Metsies rallied back for 2 in the 9th off of closer Guerra, when Lucas Duda singled home 2 runs with 2 outs.  The game went to extra innings and neither team scored in the 10th.  The Mets didn't score in the top of the 11th.  The Dodgers got a 1 out single by James Loney in the bottom of the frame.  Met manager Justin Ryan didn't want to pitch to Kemp, so he gave him an intentional pass, which moved Loney into scoring position.  Andre Either lined out to right for the 2nd out and Ryan was looking like a genius until reliever Manny Acosta spoiled the plan.  Acosta walked pinch hitter Sellers to load the bases then walked pinch hitter Juan Rivera on a 3-2 count to force in Loney for the winning run.  Matt Guerrier, who pitched 1 scoreless inning in relief, got the win for LA.

GAME 3 - 10/4/2011 - Citi Field
Dodgers 6, Mets 1
Ted Lilly vs Miguel Batista

With the Dodgers holding a commanding 2-0 lead, the series moved 3,000 miles back east to Flushing.  The game was scoreless until the top of the 5th when Jamie Carroll singled home Tony Gwynn Jr., who singled and stole 2nd base.  With 2 out Batista issued 3 consecutive walks to force in Carroll and make it a 2-0 ball game.  The Amazin's scored an unearned run in the 6th to make it a 1 run game.  Jason "sitting on the dock of a" Bay singled home Willie Harris, who struck out 2 batters earlier, but got to first on a wild pitch on his swinging strike 3.  New York could not do any further damage as Lilly got the final 2 outs in the 6th without any further damage.  Beato and Herrara conspired to allow the the Dodgers to blow the game open in the 7th.  A combination of bad fielding, RBI singles by Kemp and Either, plus a few untimely wild pitches and the Dodgers had 4 huge runs.  LA looked to cruise easily to victory as Hawksworth threw a scoreless 8th in relief of Lilly.  LA gave the ball to Hong-Chi Kuo to finish out the 9th and protect a 5 run lead.  There was no "Status-Kuo" here as LA's lefty reliever couldn't get a conventional out.  David Wright led off the inning and worked the count full, before earning a walk.  Lucas Duda singled to right center to advance Wright to second.  Hairston singled through the hole and for some unknown reason Wright decided to try and score all the way from second with his team down by 5.  Gwynn, who went 2-4 on the day, charged the ball and threw a 1 hopper to Barajas at the plate to get Wright by a sride and record the first out.  After Rueben Tejada walked to load the bases, Kuo was headed for the showers.  Matt Guerrier took the ball and threw 2 quick strikes to the NL Batting leader, Jose Reyes.  With the count 0-2 Guerrier made a stupid mistake and threw a ball right on Reyes' hands.  Jose turned on it and hit a bullet down the 3rd base line that Miles snagged in an act of self preservation.  Miles had plenty of time to throw the ball around the horn to record a game ending and series ending DP.  LA recorded the 3 game sweep of the Metsies and will now wait to see who wins the Giants/Rockies series.
